Award-winning environment and science journalist reporting from Northern Ontario, Canada.

Leah Borts-Kuperman is the Northern Ontario reporter at The Narwhal, thanks to funding from the Local Journalism Initiative. She investigates environmental issues from her home in North Bay, Ontario.

As a freelance journalist and science writer, Leah’s work is also published by the National Observer, Canadian Geographic, ON Nature, The Walrus, The Logic, The Local, TVO Today, American Chemical Society, and others. Leah is also the Copy Editor of Scribe Quarterly magazine.

Her reporting is nationally recognized, including as Best Investigative Article and Best Feel Good Story at the 2025 Canadian Online Publishing Awards. She was nominated for a 2025 National Newspaper Award for her investigation into contamination on Canadian military sites.

She has also reported on a controversial plastics factory in North Bay, a project to recover endangered bats in Shawanaga First Nation, and pollution from luxury cruise ships in Lake Superior.
